Job Description

The Essex CTC has facilities for 100 patient beds, including many individual rooms, employs over 400 staff performing an average of 450 thoracic surgical cases and between 200 and 300 non-surgical thoracic interventional procedures together with 900 cardiac and close to 2400 cardiology procedures each year.

Facilities include a highly equipped 22 bed critical care unit, separate 32-bedded cardiothoracic surgery ward; on-site cardiorespiratory assessment unit, full radiology support (CT/MRI with a mobile PET-scanner), rehabilitation gym and overnight facilities for relatives. Plans are in place to open a respiratory intervention unit in 2019 to undertake further non-surgical intervention including endobronchial therapies.

We are looking for possibly two thoracic surgical colleagues to cover a sabbatical in the first instance and to dovetail into the Centre's plan to have a substantive dedicated thoracic surgeon in the near future.

  • Essex CTC is one of the few centres in the UK has well established minimally invasive thoracic and cardiac surgical programme.
  • Thoracic surgery at present is being delivered by three cardiothoracic consultants supported by a thoracic surgical nurse specialist and dedicated administrative team (with MacMillan Cancer involvement).
  • Thoracic surgery activity has demonstrated a consistent year-on-year increase since the inception of the Centre in 2007 and we now undertake over 150 major lung resections.
  • The Centre primarily attracts patients from four major district general hospitals but there are patients referred from further afield for some of the specialist collaborative work that the Centre undertakes like chest wall resection and reconstruction.
  • There is well-equipped hybrid theatre suite which currently supports TAVI, hybrid cardiac procedures along with major vascular surgery and Interventional radiology services.
  • We are highly involved in all kinds of research trials. We have a good reputation for recruiting trial patients for anaesthesia, cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery

You must hold, or expect to hold within six months of interview, Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) and demonstrate impending inclusion onto the Specialist Register. You must have a good knowledge of cancer pathways, MDTs and satellite clinics (which is going to be a major developmental project for the Centre).
