Applications are invited for a Research Associate / Post Doctoral Research Fellow in the "Fire Materials Research" team based in the Institute for Materials Research & Innovation at the University of Bolton. The team has recently been awarded a KTP project by the Innovate UK.
This project is in collaboration with Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings (Bolton, UK) who is an industry leader in the manufacture, distribution and sale of paints and coatings for the protection of steel from corrosion, fire and marine environments. The company serves as a business hub for the Europe, Middle East, Africa and India (EMEAI) region and is a subsidiary of the multi-national Sherwin-Williams Company, which has over 50,000 employees and sales in over 120 countries.
The main aim of this project is to develop fire-resistant intumescent protective coatings with improved thermal insulation efficiency for steel and other substrates.
Applicants for the Research Associate position should hold a good honours degree and/or MSc in Chemistry, Chemical Sciences, Polymer Science, Materials Science or a related discipline. The candidate should have a good working knowledge of materials and analytical techniques. Experience in materials fire testing would be very useful for the proposed project. The candidate would have an opportunity to pursue a MPhil degree during the KTP project, therefore the successful candidate should have excellent written and oral communication skills, be highly motivated and resourceful. If the candidate has a PhD degree, the position can be upgraded to a Post Doctoral Research Fellow.
The position will be supervised by Prof Baljinder Kandola (IMRI, University of Bolton). Although the associate will be an employee of University of Bolton, he/she will spend about 75% of the time in the company for the characterisation and development, therefore a hard-working person with self-motivation is essential. The associate also needs strong communication with excellent IT skills and should be able to work with academic staff as well as the industrial partners.
Prospective candidates can contact Professor Baljinder Kandola (Tel: +44(0)1204903517, email: [email protected]) for an informal discussion relating to this opportunity.
