Summary The Communications Planner supports the Communications team to prioritise and plan communications and to monitor progress of key projects. About the Team: The role reports to the Senior Communications Planner in BEIS' award winning communications team. The holder will work closely with a wide network in BEIS including media, campaigns, external affairs and internal communication; ministerial offices, parliamentary and strategy teams; No 10, other Government departments and partner organisations such as UK Space Agency, UK Research and Innovation. Key Responsibilities: The Strategic Planning Officer will report to the Senior Communications Officer. You will be confident in engaging with senior colleagues in communications, Policy Planning & Implementation, and policy teams. You will be well organized and clear thinking, able to grasp complex issues, see the big picture, have good news sense, and make the complicated understandable. You will lead on development, production and improvement of the Horizon Scan - a 6-month forward view of communications priorities which is central to our strengthening strategic planning of communications. You will work collaboratively with colleagues from across the Directorate, wider BEIS and Partner Organisations to ensure that we plan effectively how to leverage opportunities and mitigate potential risks, in support of the BEIS and HMG narrative. You will run a triage system, with support from the Chief Strategy Manager, designed to provide a consistent approach to identification, prioritisation and resource allocation for major new communications activities. You will also lead on coordinating information for the No10 regional grid, and other cross-government grids. You will also attend the cross government Stronger Economy group and make sure they have an accurate forward look of BEIS announcements. Maintain and develop the communication team's Programme Management Reporting system, ensuring senior communications management understand status and issues, including on the major cross-government Industrial Strategy communication programme. Support the Senior Communications Planner (SCP) (including leading when SCP is absent) on: • Production of the weekly grids and daily updates, working closely with comms, strategy, policy, Parliamentary Office, Private Offices and Special Advisors • Liaison with No 10 and other Government Departments to gain agreement to and align BEIS plans and timing • Triage process for identifying, prioritising and allocating resource to new communication projects With the SCP, help build planning capability within BEIS communications, BEIS Partner Organisations and Government Communication Service. You will also support the Chief Strategy Manager in development of BEIS overall annual communications plans and in providing support to colleagues developing specific communications plans for campaigns or major announcements, events etc., working closely with Strategic Communications Evaluation & Insight colleagues Person Specification: You will be good at pulling together information from a range of sources and people. Good judgment to sort out what's most important, and to make relevant linkages, based on understanding of BEIS priorities and audiences. You're interested in shaping the direction of travel but understand the challenges in implementing effectively. You must be confident in engaging with a wide range of contacts in BEIS, its ALBs and partners. You have good Word, Excel and PowerPoint skills and will be trained to use the Microsoft Visio software used to develop the Horizon Scan. You will work closely with colleagues across Communications and with Policy & Planning Implementation colleagues to develop a strategic view across the whole landscape of BEIS work to build a forward view, or to seek the information needed to effectively prioritise communications activity. You need to grasp what lies behind the detail - and be prepared to challenge constructively. You'll have ideas on how things might work better and be able to translate ideas into action.
